Facts That Dispel Some of the Myths about Depression (Part 2)

Below are some more facts about depression that have been proven through a number of different studies and research projects that have been performed on the many types of this mental health condition.

  • Although the normal aging process does bring more depression triggers that can cause the condition, it does not mean that this condition can be compared to normal spells of sadness. Elderly individuals generally do have more depression causing factors that occur in their lives, but it does not necessarily mean that all elderly people are going to suffer from this type of condition.
  • Statistics show that there is a higher number of women that suffer from the symptoms associated with depression, than in men. However, this does not necessarily mean that there are more women than men that experience depression. It is likely that this condition is under reported in male individuals simply because most men are raised to refrain from allowing others to see signs that can be misunderstood as weakness. Changes in hormones that women experience is one of the reasons suspected that more women seek diagnosis and treatment. Children, adults, and elderly individuals of both sexes can suffer from depression.
