What Does Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) Mean?

PMDD, which is otherwise known as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, is a condition that is considered to be a severe form of PMS that is otherwise known as Premenstrual syndrome. There are as much as 3% to 9% of all women that end up suffering from the symptoms that are associated with Premenstrual Dysphortic Disorder.

In this type of disorder, the woman will generally notice the symptoms of this condition appearing about one week prior to beginning the menstruation cycle, and then they start to go away just a few days after menstruation has started. Being unlike PMS, PMDD has symptoms that are more comparable to depression, and they can often become disabling for individual suffering this condition.

Some of the most common symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder would include attempts at suicide or suicidal thoughts, fluctuations in weight by either losing weight or gaining weight, rage that is uncontrollable, and feelings of hopelessness. The symptoms of this condition can be so severe that the person often has a very hard time in accomplishing every day chores and activities. One reason for this type of disorder is thought to be an inadequate amount or serotonin in the brain.
