How to Take Trofanil

Tofranil typically comes in the form of a tablet and is to be orally taken. It is usually absorbed to a considerable degree within the gastro-intestinal tract, and can be taken with or without food. Within a period of 2 to 4 hours, peak plasma levels are reached within the body.
Since many adverse effects result as a consequence of Tofranil, the patient should strictly follow the prescription of the doctor. Tofranil is usually given in very small doses in the beginning, with the doses decreasing or increasing in amount depending upon the response of the patient. Elderly patients and children being administered with such a drug must take extra care.

For moderate patients, a dosage of 25 mg three times in a day is usually given. It is strongly recommended that the dosage, which may increase with time, does not go beyond 200 mg a day. In the case of children who are being treated for bedwetting, a dosage of about 25 mg a day is suggested, which should not go beyond 75 mg, owing to the corresponding harmful increase of side effects. A dosage of 30 mg to 40 mg in divided proportions is given to the elderly usually, and should not exceed 100 mg a day.
