General Information about Trazodone

Trazodone is a Food and Drug Association-approved second-generation anti-depressant drug. It belongs to the SARI class, which is a class of the drugs used as anti-depressants. The drugs belonging to this class actually work by dampening the serotonin receptors, which are responsible for causing various responses and processes like sleep, anxiety, depression, mood etc within the body. Trazodone is an orally taken drug, and it also has hypnotic effects.
Trazodone is basically used to treat depressive illness. Even though it’s complete action and mechanism is not fully known, it has proven to be more effective and intense than other drugs. It is quite effectively absorbed within the human body usually, but the process of absorption gets delayed by food. Trazodone is also used for secondary purposes for which it has proven itself efficient, for instance, as a sedative. Futhermore, trazodone is used often by doctors by combining with other drugs to treat aggressive behavior, and for people undergoing withdrawals from narcotic drugs, or suffering from frequent panic attacks, etc.

Some of the possible interactions of trazodone with other drugs can be dangerous. Most importantly, trazodone should not be taken by people who are already taking MAO inhibitors, like Marplan, Matulane, Nardil and Parnate.
